A significant event - Strong opposition to the relocation of Kwong Tong Cemetery Kuala Lumpur to another location

An attempt to relocate the long established century old Kwong Tong Cemetery began with the government announcement that the Cemetery which is presently located in the old airport road (Jalan Lapangan Terbang) Kuala Lumpur would be relocated to another location outside of Kuala Lumpur. The land that is used as a burial ground by the Chinese for over a century would be developed for commercial purposes. The announcement led to an uproar in the Chinese community that involved many Chinese clan associations, as well as other non-government organizations protesting strongly over the decision. All of them had been forced to express their stand - whether to agree or disagree to the relocation. Some clan associations had been accused of having secretly agreed in writing to shift a portion of their burial cemetery area.

At that time Kwong Tong Cemetery Management Committee Kuala Lumpur as well as many other Chinese clan organizations objected very strongly against the cemetery relocation plan. They were supported by certain political parties from the ruling government as well as the opposition. It generated a lot public awareness and anger from the Chinese community and views were also expressed by various Chinese newspapers. This widespread support and opposition from the public to the government development plans to relocate the cemetery gave some relief to the anxiety and worry of the Chinese people - who had to deal with their ancestors buried in those cemeteries and also the exhumation of bodies during the relocation exercise. Finally the cabinet relented and announced that the Kwong Tong Cemetery Kuala Lumpur and the other racial and religious groups could use the cemeteries in Jalan Lapangan Terbang area and they would not be relocated.

Selangor & Federal Territory Kwong Siew association had taken an early initiative and played an active part in opposing strongly the relocation plan. Our position had always been firm – that Kwong Tong Cemetery Kuala Lumpur burial sites should NOT be relocated at all. A great job by our association as well as the other adjoining cemeteries whose ancestral burial sites had been there for over a century.
